3 Tips for a Successful Flamingo Sightfishing Charter in Summertime

Sightfishing is a staple here in South Florida with the best numbers of fish found in Flamingo in Florida Bay. These fish like to swim the shallow flats in search of their next meal sometimes they work the mullet muds other times they are tailing in the grass rooting out crusteaceans each provide a unique oppurtunity for Anglers to present a well placed cast with the right lure or fly! Here are 3 tips to make your Guided Fishing trip more enjoyable!

Tip 1: PRACTICE CASTING

The number one key point that cannot be emphasized enough is casting. It is crucial for a flats fisherman to master this skill before engaging a guide for sightfishing. While I, as a guide, will provide the opportunity for you to present your lure or fly to the fish, the responsibility of making the cast lies with the angler. If you do not practice, it is unlikely that we can effectively fish as a team. Accuracy in casting is more important than focusing on distance. In flats fishing, the game revolves around precise placement rather than simply casting far without purpose. To prepare for your trip, I recommend practicing casting at least twice a week for 15-20 minutes, starting two to three weeks before your scheduled charter. Utilize a hula hoop-sized ring placed at varying locations and angles relative to your position, adjusting the distance from short (10-15 feet) to medium (30-50 feet).

Tip 2: ASK QUESTIONS DURING THE CHARTER

Being a Fishing Guide, I am proud of my teaching and skills. However, if you are not a regular flats fisherman, it is advisable to ask your Guide plenty of questions. This demonstrates your interest and enables them to guide you effectively through various situations that may arise during the day(s) and advise you on how to handle them!

Tip 3: SUNGLASSES

Newer anglers often overlook this tip, which is understandable since a pair of quality sunglasses can be expensive. However, not putting yourself in the best position to see your target will ultimately end up costing you more in the long run. I suggest investing in at least two pairs of polarized sunglasses with a wrap-around style frame and amber/copper lenses. These lenses allow you to see the contrast of colors on the bottom and the fish itself, while also reducing glare on the water's surface on bright sunny days. The second pair should have yellow lenses for low-light conditions, such as overcast days when more light is needed. It's not advisable to wear dark lenses on dark, cloudy days. Personally, I recommend brands like Costa and Smith Optics, as they offer glasses specifically designed for fishing in flat areas.

These tips will be beneficial for you when fishing in the flats, waiting for the guide's signal to cast accurately and hit your target! If you need a local fishing guide in the Flamingo area, feel free to contact me at (786) 517-7261 or email me at JP2436@ymail.com. - JP
